Toenail fungus is a fungal infection in one or more toenails. It starts out as a discoloration under the tip of your toenail but as it spreads it can cause the toenail to yellow, thicken, and become very brittle. It is an unsightly problem that can also be painful. The fungi, yeast and mold that can cause toenail fungus infections thrive in warm and humid environments. You can contract toenail fungus in pools, gyms, and bathrooms; pretty much anywhere you walk around barefoot with your feet exposed to wet conditions.

Toenail fungus has traditionally been very hard to treat, especially since toenails are often stuck inside sweaty shoes. Often times the fungus is resistant to topical creams and oral medications. However, the doctors here at South Florida Foot & Ankle Centers have experienced great success with new and innovative treatments, including antifungal nail polish and laser treatment for toenail fungus. If you are concerned that you might have this condition, call us at 561-793-6170 today or click here to request an appointment to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced West Palm Beach podiatrists or our podiatrists across South Florida.

What are Toenail Fungus?

A toenail fungus occurs when a fungal infection invades the nail bed. South Florida’s wet and humid conditions breed different types of fungal infections in the toenails. Nail fungus spreads easily and can be resistant to treatment.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus symptoms include discoloration of the toenail. As the nail fungus spreads, the nail can become yellow, brittle and very hard. The toenail can start to break apart and hurt. The main complaint from patients with this condition is the appearance.

Treatment for Toenail Fungus

Once you have fungal toenails, they are usually very hard to treat, can easily spread to other nails, and can be reoccurring. There are over-the-counter ointments and creams, but they are largely ineffective. Podiatrists can prescribe oral medications and prescription topical toenail fungus treatments. However, the drawback with those is that it can take months of daily treatment before the nail fungus clears up. Especially during this time, it is important to take preventative measures and make sure that you avoid walking barefoot in damp places and keep your feet as cool and as dry as possible. The doctors at South Florida Foot & Ankle Centers have been having great results with an antifungal toenail polish and laser treatment for toenail fungus.
