Eczema is a chronic skin condition where the skin becomes itchy, red, and irritated usually as a result of or in correlation with asthma or hay fever. It can affect any part of the skin, and we treat patients who contract it on their ankles or feet. The exact cause of eczema is unknown. Doctors believe that it is related to a weakened immune system.

Symptoms include an itchy rash, red bumps, sensitive skin, and red to brownish-gray patches on the skin that can become thick, cracked, or scaly. There are also several factors that can make eczema worse. If you have this condition, you should try to avoid:

  • dry skin
  • sweating
  • stress
  • low humidity
  • cigarette smoke
  • pollution
  • dust
  • sand
  • certain chemicals, materials, or foods that cause you allergic reactions

If the itching becomes too much or you are experiencing pain or an infection from eczema on your feet, it is time see a podiatrist. Call 561-793-6170 to schedule an appointment today with one of our podiatrists in South Florida, such as at our Palm Beach Gardens location or click here to request an appointment online.

What is Eczema?

Eczema is a type of dermatitis known as atopic dermatitis. It is a red rash or red bumps that appear as a result of an allergic reaction. Eczema can affect anyone of any age and any part of the skin. We treat patients with foot rashes from eczema when the symptoms get too much for over the counter medications and home remedies.

Symptoms of Eczema

Eczema symptoms include itching, sensitive skin, and in severe cases pain from the resulting dry and scaly skin. The itching can be worse at night and keep you from getting a good night’s sleep. If the symptoms of eczema are not being alleviated by over the counter medications, it is time to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Treatments for Eczema

There are over the counter medications that treat the symptoms of eczema including anti-itch creams and ointments that also moisturize and heal your skin that might be raw from all the scratching. If the over the counter creams are not working, your doctor may prescribe a variety of different medications that will work to treat the foot rash and relieve the itching. Light therapy is also an option to use instead of or sometimes in combination with prescriptions medicines.
