Dr.
Ortiz was born in Havana, Cuba and moved
to Florida at the age of two along with
his mother, father and older brother. He
was raised in Hialeah, Florida and
attended Miami Springs Senior High
School where he first became interested
in Sports Medicine following an injury
to his knee. Dr. Ortiz turned down
several athletic scholarships to compete
in college level wrestling in order to
pursue a career in Sports Medicine. He
attended Barry University, one of only
two schools at the time that had
obtained accreditation in their degree
program for sports medicine.
Dr. Ortiz graduated with a Bachelors
Degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic
Training and a Minor in Biology. He
subsequently continued to pursue his
education at Barry University after
developing an interest in Podiatric
Medicine. Dr. Ortiz graduated in the top
10 percentile of his Podiatric School
class and served as a tutor and mentor
to his younger classmates during his
last year of Podiatry School. He
completed externship rotations in many
high level residency programs, including
Cambridge Health Alliance of Harvard
University and Ft. Benning Hospital in
Georgia. During his rotation in Ft.
Benning Hospital, Dr. Ortiz participated
in the medical and surgical care of
traumatic injuries to soldiers
completing Military Jump School.
Following completion of Podiatry School,
Dr. Ortiz matched with his first choice
for post-graduate surgical training at
JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Florida.
During his tenure at JFK, he served as
Chief Resident from July 2006 to June
2007, and completed numerous courses on
Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Surgery and
Diabetic Limb Salvage. Dr. Ortiz has
also completed specialty training in
Reconstructive Adult and Pediatric
flatfoot correction, Deformity
Correction, Ankle Arthroscopy, Sports
Medicine, and Total Ankle Joint
Replacement. He is amongst a handful of
Podiatric Surgeons in South Florida
trained in Total Ankle Joint Replacement
and one of the first to be trained in
both the Wright Medical Inbone Total
Ankle and the Small Bone Innovations (S.T.A.R.)
Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement.
Dr. Ortiz is one of only two surgeons in
Palm Beach County with surgical
privileges for Total Ankle Joint
Replacement at both Bethesda Memorial
Hospital and JFK Medical Center.
Since completion of Residency training,
Dr. Ortiz has worked at South Florida
Foot & Ankle Centers starting in July
2007. He sees patients in our Lake Worth
and Royal Palm Beach office locations.
He is a member in good standing with the
American, Florida and Palm Beach County
Podiatric Medical Associations. He has
also served on the executive board of
the Palm Beach County Podiatric Medical
Association. Dr. Ortiz is an Associate
Member of the America College of Foot
and Ankle Surgeons and is Board
Qualified in both Forefoot Surgery and
Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle
Surgery.
Dr. Ortiz is also very supportive of the
educational advancement of Podiatric
Medicine, serving as a teaching
attending for two South Florida Surgical
Residency Programs. He is the Externship
Director of Bethesda Memorial Hospital's
three year Reconstrutive Foot & Ankle
Surgery Residency Program. His job
duties as Externship Director entail
providing direction and education to
students from all the podiatry colleges
who rotate through Bethesda Memorial
during their fourth year of schooling.
Dr. Ortiz is also very active in
lecturing and research. He lectures both
locally and nationally serving as a
consultant for two orthopedic foot and
ankle surgery instrument companies.
He is on staff and takes ER call at
several area hospitals including JFK
Medical Center, Bethesda Memorial
Hospital, Wellington Regional Medical
Center, Palms West Hospital and Palm
Beach Gardens Medical Center.
Although Dr. Ortiz is trained in the
latest advances in surgical treatments
of Foot and Ankle Conditions, it is
important to note that he exhausts all
conservative and non-surgical options
prior to considering surgical
intervention. South Florida Foot & Ankle
Centers, along with Dr. Ortiz, believe
in patient centered care focused on
providing specialized attention and
education in order to obtain the best
and fastest recovery of your foot or
ankle ailment. He will structure a care
plan along with our experienced staff of
