Heel Fissures

Heel fissures occur when the skin on your heels becomes callused, dry, and flaky. Repeated walking on bare feet with dry skin can then lead to cracks, or fissures in the skin of the heel. Heel fissures are also commonly referred to as cracked heels. It is usually more of a cosmetic issue for patients, but in some cases, dry, cracked heels can start to bleed and cause pain.

Especially in South Florida, most people like to wear flip-flops, sandals, and open shoes. Don’t let the embarrassment of cracked heels prevent you from exposing your feet. Much of the treatments for fissures are home remedies, but you should talk with a doctor about how to heal fissures if the problem with dry heels persists or if you have risk factors such as diabetes or thyroid disease that could be underlying conditions. Call 561-793-6170 to schedule an appointment with any one of our podiatrists at any location, such as our Lake Worth location.

What are Heel Fissures

Your feet are very susceptible to having dry skin because the skin on your feet is the the driest on your body. Heel fissures, or cracked heels, occur when the skin on your heels becomes very dry and then hardens into calluses. Continued pressure from walking can then cause the callused skin on your heels to crack.

Symptoms of Heel Fissures

Heel fissure symptoms are mostly in cosmetic in nature. The cracks and dry, flaking skin can be unsightly and might be a cause for embarrassment. Most of the time, these symptoms are more of a cause for cosmetic concerns, but cracked heels can become a painful problem. Severely dry, cracked heels can also lead to bleeding and possibly infection. Especially if you have risk factors that slow the flow of blood to your feet or circulation problems, you should see a podiatrist for treatment for fissures.

Treatment for Heel Fissures

Treatment for fissures along with a combination of taking steps to prevent dry, cracked heels is the best way to heal fissures. Our podiatrists can safely remove the dead skin from your heels. This has to be a careful process as to not cause further damage and cracking. Some of the steps of treatment for heel fissures are also ways that you can prevent from getting them in the first place. They include: moisturizing your feet twice daily and during the night, wearing closed shoes, not walking barefoot, and regularly exfoliating the dead skin with a pumice stone.
